This position exists to assist in the implementation of GD NASSCO’s Environmental Program, taking appropriate measures to minimize or eliminate potential environmental risks, and ensure full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
The incumbent assists in the development and coordination of environmental programs and projects in support of GD NASSCO’s environmental compliance program.
The incumbent reports to and is responsible to the Manager, Environmental Engineering, and schedules own activities within management guidelines.
The incumbent works under general supervision and follows established procedures.
Work is reviewed upon completion for soundness of technical judgment and overall adequacy and accuracy.
Incumbent plans and manages environmental programs and projects of routine scope under the leadership of an Environmental Engineering Specialist. These responsibilities may include:
A. Assist to plan, develop and implement programs, policies and procedures to minimize the potential environmental impacts associated with GD NASSCO’s operations.
B. Assist to develop, implement and coordinate GD NASSCO’s compliance programs and procedures related to hazardous materials/waste management, waste minimization/source reduction, air pollution control and wastewater discharge; assist in related training of facility personnel.
C. Develop a working knowledge of the permit process for all regulatory bodies governing GD NASSCO’s activities, and assist to obtain/maintain permits as required to conduct GD NASSCO operations or construction of facilities.
D. Develop an awareness of current developments in environmental laws and regulations to determine their applicability and impact on GD NASSCO.
E. Serve as an assistant GD NASSCO representative during inspections and at meetings and hearings before appropriate local, state and national regulatory agencies as well as various technical and civic committees or organizations relating to environmental matters.
F. Assist to administer all monitoring and reporting as required by the environmental regulations and permits. This may include establishing sampling and analysis procedures; compiling, analyzing and evaluating the generated data; and preparing the required reports.
G. The incumbent is expected to exercise a high degree of eagerness in the performance of these duties, keeping the Manager of Environmental Engineering advised of the status of the work, including any (potential) problem areas.
H. Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time and reduce cost.
This position requires knowledge of the principles and techniques of Environmental Engineering gained through an Associate of Science degree and a minimum of Seven (7)years related experience.
Bachelors of Science degree, and a minimum of Five (5) years related expericence preferred.
A. Incumbent must have a basic understanding of the Federal, State and Local regulations that are applicable to GD NASSCO’s operations.
B. Effective written and, oral communicative skills are mandatory.
C. The ability to effectively interface with and make presentations before regulatory bodies at the local and state levels, as well as middle levels of company management is required.
D. The position demands a sense of responsibility and attention to detail.
Successful completion of tasks and contribution of ideas enhances quality, timeliness and cost effectiveness of GD NASSCO’s Environmental Program.
While performing the duties of the position, the incumbent must be able to walk to all yard locations and occasionally aboard vessels as part of daily inspections.
The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, smoke and moderate noise levels when performing inspections.
Must be able to handle stressful situations.
