The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. The USC Department of Public Safety (DPS) is one of the largest campus public safety departments in the United States employing 300+ full-time personnel and 30 part-time student workers. The department’s primary mission is to provide a safe and secure environment on campus and in the local USC community that allows students, faculty, staff and campus visitors to realize their academic and social pursuits.
We seek a Public Safety Officer I to join our dynamic team. The Public Safety Officer I provides service functions to support the general safety of the university community. Patrols an assigned area and responds to radio and/or telephonic calls for routine and/or emergency assistance in both criminal and non-criminal matters. Performs investigations and makes arrests when necessary. Deters and prevents unlawful behavior, and performs internal and external public safety functions. Carries firearms and works under the direct supervision of a watch commander, field supervisor or a unit manager/supervisor. Has peace officer “powers of arrest” authority pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the LAPD while on-duty.
• Patrols an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle. Responds to telephonic and/or radio calls for routine and emergency assistance in both criminal and non-criminal situations. Assesses circumstances and conditions at the scene of an incident and determines the appropriate response.
• Conducts preliminary investigations of criminal and non-criminal incidents. Interviews victims, witnesses, suspects, and others. Issues citations and/or makes arrests. Conducts follow-up investigations as required.
• Maintains an accurate record of daily activities. Prepares comprehensive incident and crime reports. Ensures reports are legally sufficient through consultation with supervisors.
• Assesses severity of medical emergencies, provides first aid, summons medical assistance as required, and transports non-life threatening sick and injured.
• Testifies in court on criminal and civil matters affecting the interests of the university.
• Maintains perimeter and crowd control in the areas of crimes, emergencies, and special activities.
• Escorts university and hospital employees, faculty, staff, students and/or hospital patients between facilities and their vehicles.
• Presents crime prevention and public information programs.
• Maintains security of buildings and university related property by controlling access, and the opening and securing of buildings.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
• Successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Academy. The Regular Basic Course (academy) is the entry-level training requirement for many California peace officers, as specified in POST Regulation 1005. Or completion of equivalent out of state training, or one (1) year experience as a USC Community Service Officer and meet the POST or equivalency requirement.
• Minimum education high school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum experience 1 year.
• Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Must have the State of California Patrol Persons and Firearms permits.
Must be able to work varied days and rotating shifts: 10 hours per day, 4 days a week, 40 hours per week. Examples of schedules are 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM, 5:00 PM – 3:30 AM, 9:30 PM – 8:00 AM. Must be able to report for work in case of emergencies.
Step 1: Application – An employment application and cover letter is required and must be submitted online. Step 2: Written Examination – Applicants successful in Step 1 listed above will be invited, via email, to take the written examination and includes both a cognitive (i.e., problem-solving) and an attitude/behavioral-orientation (i.e., criminal justice officer orientation) component.
Step 3: Physical Agility Test (PAT) – Applicants successful in passing the written exam will be invited, via email, to take the Physical Abilities Test (PAT). This test is designed to measure strength, agility, and endurance and will be administered by the Rio Hondo Police Academy Staff.
Step 4: Oral Interview – Applicants successful in passing the PAT will be invited, via email, to participate in a panel interview. This interview will assess the candidate’s knowledge, education, experience, and general ability to successfully perform in the position.
Step 5: Background Screening by HireRight – Applicants successful in passing the oral interview will be notified, via email, to start a background screening by HireRight which consists of a criminal background check, SSN Trace, Motor Vehicle Record, National Sex Offender Registry, Employment Verification, Education Verification and Military Service.
Step 6: POST Background Investigation – The background investigator will contact employers, references, family members and neighbors to assess the applicant’s character.
Step 7: Psychological Evaluation – If you meet the background standards you will be scheduled for an oral psychological interview.
Step 8: Medical Exam – If you meet the background standards you will be scheduled for a job related pre-placement medical exam which includes a drug screen.
Time Frame: Be prepared for the process to take between three to six months to complete.
