This position, located within the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, provides assistance in implementing the Recreation Therapy program for patients with severe disabilities. The employee will assist the Recreation Therapist in carrying out a full range of treatment modalities and working with patients who have a variety of illness, disease and/or disabling conditions with varying degrees of impairment.

REQUIREMENT: A driver’s license is required with the expectation of driving patients to and from various locations; therefore, you must possess a valid state driver’s license. -AND-
In addition to the requirements above, to qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must also meet one of the following requirements:
EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience includes work as an assistant to one of the specialized therapies such as occupational, physical, manual arts, corrective, or educational therapy; or experience gained as an assistant or aid in patient care, social work, or psychology where the duties involved actual participation in physical medicine and activities of a hospital or clinic. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. -OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with courses related to the work of a Therapy Assistant for example: exercise science including functional anatomy, exercise physiology, psychology and injury prevention. COMBINATION: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and post-high school education as described above that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-05 level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work of this position requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; pushing or pulling heavy objects Ă which include Veterans in wheelchairs; and leading or directing physical exercise/sports programs.
The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts that require special safety and health precautions (i.e. working regularly with patients and in situations where there is risk of exposure to contagious diseases, odors and/or flammable gases, and/or physical injury as the result of a patient’s assaultive/aggressive behavior that is secondary to a mental health diagnosis).
