This position serves as a WG-4 Food Service Worker (FSW) with Nutrition and Food Service (NFS) of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLA). NFS is responsible for a variety of food production and service functions at the West Los Angeles Heatlhcare Center (WLA), the Sepulveda Community Living Center and Ambulatory Healthcare Center (SACC) and the VA Long Beach Healthcare System (LB). This position may be assigned to any of these locations and within any unit involved with food service at these locations.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Instructs lower graded employees in their work unit and assures that they adhere to standard operating procedures and policies.
Sets up trays, plates, bowls, cups, glasses, silverware, entres, starches, vegetables, salads, desserts, bread, condiments, straws, napkins, hot and cold beverages and any other needed items.
Assembles sample plates as appropriate.
Portions and serves food and drinks to customers, providing uniform portions.
Participates in the preparation of simple foods, such as sandwiches, toast, salads and simple desserts that may be served in the cafeteria.
Ensures proper sanitation and food handling practices are used.
Breaks down and cleans the area after the completion of the meal.
Sends soiled trays, dishes, utensils, pans, etc. to the sanitation area for cleaning.
Ensures leftover food items are used or disposed of according to Service policy.
Operates the beverage dispensing machines including cleaning and sanitizing, loading the beverage concentrate, and assuring the unit is dispensing appropriately.
Assists cooks in food preparation of simple foods and beverages.
Properly washes, peels, chops, cut and dices food as assigned.
Ensures foods are covered, dated and stored according to standard operating procedures.
Prints individual nourishment and ward stock lists.
Assembles individual and bulk nourishment according as indicated.
Selects and places food items on patient trays as they proceed down the tray assembly line according to specification on tray tickets.
Assists with off-loading of insulated food carts from delivery truck.
Heats patient meal trays using food service rethermalization equipment.
Performs tray corrections for patients with diet changes as indicated by diet activity reports, remove trays of discharged patients, and prepare trays for new admissions.
Returns soiled trays to the cart and takes cart to galley for transport.
Other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Part-Time, 20 hours per week; Monday - Friday, Wednesday - Sunday, Friday - Tuesday shifts, 5:00am - 9:00am or 3:00pm - 7:00pm, as determined by the needs of the Service and seniority.

Qualifications & Evaluations
Your background must demonstrate experience in performing a full range of food service worker which includes preparing foods and beverages; setting up station and serving food items; receiving and storing food and supplies; using a computer to enter and retrieve information related to diet orders, diet changes, and/or tray tickets; and applying knowledge of procedures related to preparing food, trays, and serving customers in a healthcare setting or other type of food service environment (such as restaurants, hotels, cafeterias, military bases, or other quantity food service institutions).
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which appears in the on-line questionnaire. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.
