USC’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking a General and Chemical Safety Specialist I to join their team! Under the supervision of the Chemical Safety Officer, the General and Chemical Lab Safety Specialist I will assist with the implementation of the university lab safety program and the chemical hygiene plan. The General and Chemical Lab Safety Specialist will also provide technical guidance for complex scientific procedures with hazardous materials.
Additional job accountabilities include:
- Conducts field audits for compliance to program regulations. Documents results and recommends corrective action where non-compliance is found. Follows-up, as required.
- Develop written materials detailing chemical hazards, incompatibilities, and health effects, and train research personnel on these topics.
- Assist PIs and lab researchers in the development of lab specific SOPs as they relate to standard lab operations and experimental procedures.
- Work with labs to identify needs and gaps, and to implement programs that will address those needs. This includes remediation of high-hazard labs containing large, complex chemical inventory, and providing training, tailored to specific PIs needs.
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree
Minimum Experience: 1 year
Minimum Field of Expertise: Science education or directly related experience
Preferred Education: Master’s or PhD in Chemistry
Preferred Experience: 3+ years of research lab experience, preferably in a chemical related subject.
