The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music invites applications for a faculty position in Music Industry in the Division of Contemporary Music.
The is one of two full-time, instructional faculty appointments currently open in Music Industry, to start on August 16, 2018.
This appointment is intended to draw upon a significant and impactful background in professional practice and is therefore not eligible for tenure. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

The USC Thornton Music Industry program prepares students to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry that is largely rooted in the Los Angeles area. The program combines classroom/online study, technical instruction and hands-on experience for those seeking a career in the music business. The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Industry, a Music Industry undergraduate minor, and will launch a new Master of Science degree in Music Industry in fall 2018. As part of the Division of Contemporary Music, the Music Industry program has wide-ranging interdisciplinary and collaboration opportunities with the Jazz, Screen Scoring, Popular Music, Music Technology, and Guitar programs.
Applicants should possess expertise and proven success in past and emerging trends associated with at least one of the following areas:
- Live music promotion
- Music marketing (may include big business, consumer behavior, brand development, emerging/grassroots, using of data analytics, social/streaming tools)
- Artist management including full length artist/product release campaign strategy
In addition, candidates should have excellent communication skills, be a strong collaborator, and fully embrace the mission of the Thornton School and Division of Contemporary Music.
Principal duties include teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level, mentoring of students on career-related issues, serving the program in faculty meetings, participating on School of Music and/or University committees and liaising, connecting and advocating for the Thornton School externally with contemporary opinion makers and leaders in the music industry.
An ideal candidate is a seasoned professional with demonstrated success as a leader in the music industry, with a solid understanding of and reputation in the music business community, as well as teaching experience in the higher education, continuing education, or executive training environment.
Minimum qualifications: a Bachelor’s degree, five years of professional music industry experience, and demonstrated record of successful teaching or mentorship.
Preferred qualifications: an advanced graduate degree, seven or more years of professional music industry experience and three or more years of university-level teaching.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The initial review of applications will commence in mid-January 2018 and the position will remain open until filled.
