Educator, Physical Science
The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City is one of the premier science, research and cultural institutions in the country.The American Museum of Natural History is seeking to hire a full-time Educator of Physical Science to teach science courses to and develop curriculum for New York City youth in museum programs from grades 5-12. There are a variety of courses that span the various age groups and can take many different formats, including a 12-hour Friday afternoon course, a 24-hour after-school research course that meets twice a week and is co-taught with a scientist, a 30-hour middle school institute that runs in the summer and over depends on experience breaks, and numerous different courses that run on weekends. The Educator will also be asked to write new curriculum and revise existing curriculum as the opportunity arises.
Ideal candidates must be knowledgeable and confident with high school level astrophysics or earth science and have experience teaching urban youth. The candidate must be able to learn and deliver the courses in a manner that aligns with the Museum's pedagogical approach, which includes co-teaching courses alongside an AMNH scientist. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in education or science; a Master's degree in education or science is a plus. Ideal candidates must be available to work select Saturdays and Sundays, and when working on weekdays, be available to teach until 6:30 pm.
The Educator will report directly to the Senior Manager of Curriculum and Teaching.
Must have a Bachelor's degree in education or science; Master's degree preferred.
Experience teaching urban youth is required.
Must have confidence and experience teaching high-school level physical science content in engaging ways.
Experience co-teaching is considered a plus.
