Controller
Position Purpose/Summary of Position:
This position is primarily responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the Finance and Accounting Department, including: monthly financial reporting, receivables and cash receipts, payables and cash disbursements, recording investment activity, coordination of the audit process and related external financial reporting. Additionally, the position will need to interact with faculty and staff to provide financial and budgeting information as necessary.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists the Director of Finance in maintaining, analyzing and reporting the financial performance of the School including:
o Assists with preparation of monthly financial statements including Statements of Activities and the Statement of Net Assets
o Assistance in preparation of the timely monthly financial reporting package to the Finance Committee
o Monthly budget variance analysis including coordination, communication and analysis with faculty and staff on their budgets, identifying variance issues and proposing recommendations for amendments if necessary
o Reconciliation of the general ledger to subsidiary ledgers and/or other support schedules and documentation
Coordination and preparation for the annual financial audit including:
o Coordination with departments regarding requested information prior to and during field work with external accounting firm
o Preparation of audit support schedules and any other requests from the auditors
o Timely issuance of the audit report
Management of the overall daily operation of the business office including:
o Coordination with Student Billing Administrator regarding tuition payments and resolution of issues therein related in addition to posting certain daily online cash receipt activity and accounts receivable
o Management and oversight of purchase orders, accounts payable and check request authorization
o Operating cash management
o Chart of account management
o Oversight of daily general ledger postings
Supervision of accounting staff
Other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
- Certified Public Accountant is preferred
- Minimum of 5 years experience as a Controller or similar position
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Excellent leadership skills
- Not-for-profit organization experience preferred, preferably in an academic setting with similar financial structures
- Possession of pleasant and collaborative style in the workplace including professional attitude, effective interpersonal oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, dependability and initiative
- Experience with Blackbaud/Financial Edge applications software
- Excellent computer skills
Physical and Work Requirements:
- Remain in a stationary position 90% of the time
- Occasional movement about the office and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
- Ability to work in excess of 8 hours a day, as well as evening and weekend hours as necessary
- Occasional travel from campus to campus
